Westminster City Council and TfL consultation on the proposed transformation of Oxford Street

Monday 24 April 2017

Westminster City Council and Transport for London have today announced they will be holding a consultation on the proposed transformation of Oxford Street and the surrounding district. The full letter outlining the consultation can be found below.

To find out more and to have your say, please visit the TfL website www.tfl.gov.uk/oxford-street. The deadline for comments is 18 June 2017.

Dear Sir or Madam,

We are writing to invite you to take part in a consultation on the proposed transformation of Oxford Street and the surrounding district.

A world class destination, Oxford Street is a leading shopping and cultural hub which welcomes around 500,000 visitors every day. It is also home to a vibrant local community.

Whilst crowding, air quality, road safety and congestion can negatively impact the area, the opening of the Elizabeth line in 2018 provides a once in a lifetime opportunity to radically improve this unique part of the West End for generations to come.

Westminster City Council and Transport for London (TfL) are working together to significantly improve the Oxford Street district. We are developing proposals to transform it into a first-class public space, with significantly reduced traffic levels and neighbourhoods that people remain proud to call home. We now want to hear from as many people as possible, who live, work, run a business or visit the district to share their views with us on the challenges and opportunities to improve things for the better.

Although our over-arching vision applies to the entirety of Oxford Street and we do want to hear views about the whole district, this consultation is particularly focused on the section of Oxford Street from Orchard Street to Oxford Circus. We will hold separate more detailed consultations on the remaining sections as any work is expected to be done in phases.

To find out more and to have your say, please visit the TfL website www.tfl.gov.uk/oxford-street. The deadline for comments is 18 June 2017.

Once our consultation has closed we will consider all of the issues raised and decide how to proceed. We will use the views gathered at this stage to inform a further round of consultation that is planned for autumn 2017, during which we will ask for your comments on a more defined and specific set of proposals. No final decisions will be taken on the future of Oxford Street until we have completed both rounds of consultation.

Yours sincerely,

Cllr Robert Davis MBE DL, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Business, Culture and Heritage

Valerie Shawcross CBE, Deputy Mayor for Transport

Mike Brown MVO, Commissioner, Transport for London
